Third Wedding and a Birthday

Hard to believe so much time has passed since my last blog post. It’s not that nothing has gone on — it’s simply that life has been too jammed packed with excitement to sit down and actually write about it. Wedding #3 Three years ago, Rob and I did what most couples only dream of doing…we had a “destination wedding” in Costa Rica. Although how lucky for us that we actually were living in Costa Rica when we decided to take that leap into blissful eternity. Our first ceremony was when we were legally married by a Costa Rican lawyer and then a few days later we said our vows publicly in a beautiful union amongst all of our family and friends. But when we moved back to...

This Thanksgiving

Can you feel it? What…might you wonder? The holidays are officially here! You’ll have to excuse my over-the-top delight, but this year the holidays have taken on a whole new role in my life. While most are dreading the holiday season…the overspending, the congested traffic jams, the over-indulging of food, the holiday commercials and the annoyance of spending time with relatives you would not normally wish to be around…I, on the other hand, am welcoming it all with wide open arms. You have to remember, we spent the last three years in Costa Rica where holidays were celebrated (although just us Gringos had Thanksgiving dinner), but it just never felt the same. I was lucky to have my parents to share the holidays with (which unfortunately meant Rob...

Learning to Stand…When She’s Ready

“Lola had a good day. Able to maintain balance with rocking stool by herself in standing. Better from for bench sit to stand – leaning forward instead of pushing back into support. Completed stand to bench sitting by herself several times.” This was Lola’s physical therapy report from Tuesday and by far the most positive one she has ever received from her PT. While we are diligently working with Lola’s use of her orthotics, standing is proving to be quite difficult for Lola. We were told that when one area of therapy excels such as crawling or her vision, the others may regress or be harder to achieve such as standing or self-feeding. Lola’s biggest challenge in standing is her low muscle tone. Sister has abs of steel,...

Adjusting

How are we enjoying the United States? Well I must say it feels pretty good. I love the family feel, the whole spirit of Christmas, the simplicity of certain things, the bargain shopping, all of my vegetarian food (I ate a meatless Kielbasa last night – wait that sounded very dirty!) and I especially love our little home. It feels right being here, but it does not come without its downfalls. As of right now, it will take Lola almost two months to receive therapy through First Steps. TWO MONTHS! This is supposed to be an early intervention program funded by the State…notice the word “early”. I was outraged hearing it would take an intake coordinator two weeks to see Lola, another couple of weeks to see if...

B-I-N-G-O

Our good friend, Maria volunteers for the Lion’s Club of Costa Rica and this year they decided to hold a BINGO gathering in order to help raise money for things like wheelchairs, crutches, food and other essential items. Costa Ricans love BINGO and I have to admit…now I do too. You can win anything from an entire chicken to eggs to mattresses to nice candle holders and even money. Heck the last time I played, I won some tupperware and a lotto ticket. Anyone that knows me can tell you I am all about playing the lotto. Not only do you play, you get to eat good Costa Rican food too. And as Gringos, well we always get the funny stares because it is not a Gringo sport....
