On Sunday, May 18th, Visually Impaired Preschool Services of Indiana (VIPS) joined 20 other area nonprofits at the Walking for Dreams 5K in downtown Indianapolis. The underlying theme of the event is “to help others help themselves” and that’s exactly what VIPS did on Sunday. With 98 walkers from Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan, VIPS raised over $8800! These are staggering numbers given it was VIPS’ first year at the event.
I am pleased to share that Team Lola raised over $2000 for VIPS on Sunday! We received countless donations from family members, friends and people who heard about Lola’s story and wanted to help. I probably annoyed most everyone on Facebook as social media is the easiest way to get the message out, but I kept reiterating how much VIPS changed our lives and it’s the truth. Our lives became better the moment Miss Annie walked into our house and I want to be sure that every family with a blind or visually impaired baby in Indiana has access to VIPS services and support. And while this won’t happen overnight–we made great strides on Sunday (ha ha–no pun intended!).
I was lucky enough to have my best friend, Alexis and her kids down for the event. They have come to support Lola in fundraising efforts before and this year, Alexis raised over $430 for Team Lola! Lex and I have been friends since the 2nd grade and while I live in Indiana and she lives in Michigan, we always pick up right where we left off. Seeing her daughter, Kadyn (who is finishing up the 2nd grade) reminds me of how little we were when our friendship began. Now here we are with kids of our own, trying to navigate through the world as adults. Much can be said about long lasting friendships and I’m thankful to have a handful of amazing women in my life that I get to call friends. And while not everyone could come join us at the event, I could feel their love and support from afar.
But again, many thanks to those of you that supported Team Lola and VIPS. This organization means the world to our family and I’m grateful that we were able to give back to them.
